Chapter 12
The first shock comes with the cameras.
They’re already outside by morning.
News vans.
Drones.
Speculation.
Saxton steps into it willingly, composed, polished, framed as a visionary philanthropist under unfair attack, while Michelle watches from behind tinted glass, feeling like she’s observing a performance she helped fund but never agreed to star in.
Embarrassment flares when her name trends again, paired with words like volatile and ex-con, when strangers dissect her expressions from old footage like evidence of something rotten.
Even Lena can’t cross the security perimeter.
Saxton delivers a speech.
Controlled.
Earnest.
False.
That’s when the first revelation hits.
He announces he’s donating half the fortune.
Applause erupts.
Michelle’s stomach drops.
She realizes immediately what he’s done.
He’s reframed the ultimatum.
If anything happens now, he looks like the moral one.
If she opposes him, she looks greedy.
Later, in private, she confronts him.
“You’re manipulating the threat,” she says.
Saxton smiles.
“I’m neutralizing it.”
He leans closer, voice low, dangerous.
“And if someone dies,” he adds, “it won’t be me.”
Michelle steps back.
For the first time, she understands that Saxton isn’t just willing to sacrifice her.
He’s preparing for it.
