Chapter 7
They pull Enrique aside.
Not me.
I don’t get to defend myself.
I wait alone in the green room.
My phone lights up and it’s a text from him:
Don’t apologize.
when Janet storms in.
“You embarrassed the show,” she hisses. “You embarrassed her.”
I laugh. Once.
“I danced,” I say.
Janet’s eyes go cold.
“You forgot your place.”
Enrique comes back pale.
“They’re docking my pay,” he says. “Threatening disqualification.”
“What if,” I say slowly, “we stop giving them what they want?”
He looks at me.
A flicker in his eyes.
“They’ll punish you,” he says.
“I know.”
