They catch her anyway.
Not dramatically.
Not violently.
Just hands on her arms and too many eyes watching as she’s led out of the salon, the humiliation settling into her bones deeper than the cuffs biting into her wrists.
The headlines are brutal.
Twin Siblings in Armed Robbery.
One Arrested. One Missing.
Saxton’s face is everywhere.
Smiling.
Untouchable.
Beautiful.
In court, he doesn’t show.
That’s revelation one.
His lawyer does.
Expensive. Confident.
The judge barely looks at Michelle.
She feels small. Replaceable. Already decided.
It becomes procedural.
Months pass in holding cells and courtrooms where people talk about her like she’s not there.
She learns Saxton turned state’s evidence.
That’s the second revelation.
He blamed everything on her.
The gun.
The guard.
The plan.
He says she panicked.
He says she pulled the trigger.
She doesn’t scream.
She doesn’t cry.
She just watches him on a screen, composed and clean, telling her life like it’s a story he practiced.
She takes a plea.
Five years.
She serves two.
Gets out early for good behavior.
Mississippi hasn’t changed.
Her mother doesn’t hug her when she comes home.
Just nods.
